Getting Out of My Comfort Zone.
Anita Welbon, Chicago, IL

My comfort zone was retaining control of my life, which meant never allowing myself to be in a dependent situation. However, during the presidential election I met a man from Manchester, England, who offered me an opportunity to travel with him to Las Vegas and San Francisco. I had a free airline ticket that would allow me to meet him in Las Vegas and continue to San Francisco, but not the resources to cover my expenses in those cities or to return to Chicago. My mind said no, but my heart said take a chance.

I took the chance and had the adventure of my life. Not only did I enjoy his company and meeting the many people we encountered along our journey together, but he shared with me the one thing I truly needed to hear. He encouraged me to write our story, saying that if I gave only 10% effort, the return would be 50%. He believed in me and my ability to make a difference in the world through writing. That same evening we met Loretta Love Huff who had self-published her own book and seemed to be a sign that I should take the plunge into a writing life that I had dreamed about for thirty years.

Doubts, fears and distractions delayed my actions, but this summer I had no more excuses. I began writing our story. However, one day, in the midst of writing the rough draft of “our story,” I wrote another story as a way to transmute an aggravating situation that was driving me crazy. I was so pleased with the result, I decided to set up a blog and publish the story. I e-mailed friends, family and colleagues to announce the publication of my first blog story. The response was immediate and positive.

For the first time I experienced the thrill of publishing. I had no idea what a rush writing and publishing could be, although I’ve taught literature for almost twenty years. I received what I needed to continue to write: the knowledge that what I wanted to say through writing an audience wanted to hear.

My efforts of writing this summer exceeded my expectations. Now I know what the true reward of following your heart is. No matter what you think you’re going for, when you do what your heart desires, you discover that not only will you land on new solid ground, but from that new ground you can fly!
